Senators announce new bill that would regulate online political ads

As tech companies face continued scrutiny over Russian activity on their ad platforms, Senators today announced legislation meant to regulate political ads on the internet.

The new bill, called the Honest Ads Act, would require companies like Facebook and Google to keep copies of political ads and make them publicly available. Under the act, the companies would also be required to release information on who those ads were targeted to, as well as information on the buyer and the rates charged for the ads. The new rules would bring disclosure rules more in line with how political ads are regulated in mediums like print and TV, and apply to any platform with more than 50...

Pretty sure the courts won't allow that.

Flexibits’ Cardhop for Mac

cardhop-for-mac-flexibits

Today, Flexibits released Cardhop, a new contacts app for Mac. Like another of their apps, Fantastical — which happens to be our favorite calendar app for Mac — Cardhop makes clever use of natural-language input, but for contact management rather than calendar events.

Bring up the menu bar app, type just about anything contact-related into the single text field, and Cardhop will figure out what you’re after. You can add new contacts, edit existing ones, add people to groups, create notes about people, send emails, make calls, write tweets, and more.

David Sparks shared another neat tip:

You can even perform functions with data that is not in your address book. For instance, if you type in “Dial 1-800-GOFEDEX”, it translates the letters into the appropriate numbers and dials the phone for you.

Speaking of, David helped Flexibits out by making a series of instructional videos showing a bunch of things you can do with Cardhop. You can also watch the trailer video:

Two more tidbits about the app:

  1. It has light and dark themes, which every app these days should have if you ask me.
  2. The icon was designed by one of my favorite artists, David Lanham.

Cardhop is $15 on the Mac App Store.

I've seen the app on many blogs in the last 48 hours. I've got to think Cardhop is paying for the posts, even if there's no mention of it.

Stephen King doesn’t know why you’re so obsessed with the child orgy in It

Stephen King’s massive 1986 novel It is 1,200 pages of child gang activity, child murder, child attempted-murder, and about 10 pages of a child orgy. He doesn’t really understand why you’re so hung up on the last part, though.

In a 2013 forum post, a fan shared an unsourced statement from King which read, in part:

“I wasn’t really thinking of the sexual aspect of it... The sexual act connected childhood and adulthood. It’s another version of the glass tunnel that connects the children’s library and the adult library. Times have changed since I wrote that scene and there is now more sensitivity to those issues.”

This weekend, Vulture got in touch with King to see if that statement actually came from him, and to ask if he would like to...

Because it's a book about killing people, primarily kids. If a porno had a scene with a clown killing children, we'd talk about that, too.

And it's a train, not an orgy.

Leaked iPhone 8 firmware reveals animated emoji, Face ID, and updated AirPods

Apple’s big September event doesn’t start until Tuesday, but leaks are giving us a good idea of what’s going to be announced. While we’ve already seen a lot about the iPhone 8 thanks to various HomePod firmware leaks, a newly leaked final build of iOS 11 contains even more about the unannounced iPhone. 9to5Mac reports that the iPhone 8 (or whatever Apple calls it) will include a “Face ID” unlock that will likely replace Touch ID.

Face ID

Face ID is referenced in Apple’s firmware, and it appears to be the official name for the new way to unlock the iPhone 8 with just your face. A leaked setup animation shows that iPhone 8 owners will have to move their face around for the front-facing cameras to scan it and use it for unlocking the phone...

"A leaked setup animation shows that iPhone 8 owners will have to move their face around for the front-facing cameras to scan it and use it for unlocking the phone automatically."

That sounds really stupid. I can't imagine holding my phone in front of my face and moving my head around to unlock it.

I read it as just a setup thing, kind like you have to scan your fingerprint a bunch of times to set up Touch ID

These 3D-printed Switch adapters allow one-handed gamers to play Zelda

The versatility of the Nintendo Switch and its Joy-Con controllers is one of the console’s greatest strengths. An engineer named Julio Vazquez has taken that idea even further to create a 3D-printed Joy-Con adapter that lets disabled gamers play with only one hand. The creation was first spotted by Eurogamer.

Vazquez developed the adapters for his friend Rami Wehbe, who lost the ability to control his right hand in a cerebrovascular accident, but still wanted to be able to play The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. Vazquez ended up with two designs for the Joy-Con controllers. One resembles Nintendo’s Joy-Con grip, but it pushes the controller halves together to make it easy to reach across to the other side. It also adds two...
